Christmas Lights in San Antonio 2026: The Big Shows Compared

By the Farms & Fairs editorial team · Updated November 6, 2026 · How we check listings

San Antonio's holiday lights fall into three groups. Downtown there's the free River Walk. In the city itself there are ticketed shows: the Botanical Garden, the zoo and the two theme parks out on the northwest and west sides. Then there are bigger, more rural displays up I-35 in New Braunfels and up I-10 in Boerne. Which one is right comes down to three questions: do you want to walk or stay in the car, how much do you want to spend, and how far will the kids last?

We compared the main shows using each organizer's own website, checked on November 6, 2026. Where a show hasn't posted its 2026 dates or prices, we say so rather than guess.

Which one should you pick?

Free, and the most San Antonio: the River Walk

The River Walk lights are switched on at the Ford Holiday River Parade on Friday, November 27, and stay lit from sundown to sunrise into early January. You don't need a ticket to walk under them. On parade night you can buy a reserved seat or a dinner package, or take your chances in the free viewing area on the east bank between Pecan Street and Richmond Avenue. Get there early if you go for the free spot.

Staying in the car: Santa's Ranch

Santa's Ranch beside I-35 in New Braunfels is the only drive-thru on this list. It opens first, on November 6, and is open every night until January 3, rain included. It's priced by the car ($37 plus tax), so a full minivan makes it good value, and the dog can come along. A $74 season pass makes sense if you know you'll come back with visiting family.

A night in a garden: Illuminate

Illuminate at the Botanical Garden is a walking trail of light displays and runs the longest, until January 10, which helps if your holidays run late. Entry is timed. Tickets can't be refunded or swapped once bought, so choose your night carefully, and budget for parking, which isn't included. December 1 is a sensory-friendly night, worth knowing if someone in your family finds crowds and noise hard.

The kids want rides: Fiesta Texas or SeaWorld

Both theme parks make a day of it. At Fiesta Texas a one-day ticket and the Silver Pass cost the same, $69. The pass includes parking and every visit through 2027, so it is the better buy. Go between December 26 and 31 for fireworks. The SeaWorld Christmas Celebration has Christmas shows, Santa and lights across the park from November 12. Both run on select dates only, so check each park's calendar before you go.

Something different: the Old West town in Boerne

The Old West Christmas Light Fest at Enchanted Springs Ranch puts its lights on a replica Western town. It may be the best value per family on this list. A ticket is $25 and children 5 and under go free, and it covers Santa photos, a barrel train for small kids, cookie decorating, campfires and parking. The catch is that it's open only 15 nights, mostly weekends, then every night from December 18 to 23.

The kick-off: Light the Way

If you want to start the season early, the University of the Incarnate Word's Light the Way festival is on Saturday, November 21, from 3 to 9 pm. This is its 40th year, with the campus lit up, music, food and shopping. It is a one-night event, a week before the River Walk lights go on.

When each show opens

  • November 6: Santa's Ranch, New Braunfels
  • November 12: SeaWorld Christmas Celebration
  • November 20: Illuminate at the Botanical Garden
  • November 21: Holiday in the Park at Fiesta Texas, and Light the Way at UIW (one night)
  • November 27: River Walk lights and parade, and the Old West Christmas Light Fest in Boerne
  • Not confirmed yet: Zoo Lights. We will add the dates once we can verify them with the zoo.

The Boerne fest closes first, on December 23. Santa's Ranch, Fiesta Texas, SeaWorld and the River Walk run into the first days of January, and Illuminate lasts until January 10.

Tips before you go

  • Buy online for weekends. Timed slots on December weekends sell out, and walk-up tickets at Illuminate depend on what is left that night.
  • Count the parking. It is extra at the Botanical Garden, free at the Boerne fest and included with the Fiesta Texas Silver Pass.
  • Plan around Thanksgiving weekend. The River Walk parade, the Pearl's tree lighting and Dickens on Main in Boerne all fall on November 27–28, so downtown and Boerne will be busy.
  • Combine the trip. The Pearl's Holiday Night Market on December Wednesdays is close to the zoo and the Botanical Garden. Boerne and New Braunfels both have holiday markets and tree farms within reach.

How we checked: dates, hours and prices come from each organizer's website as of November 6, 2026. Where we could not confirm 2026 details, we say so. Things change during the season, so confirm on the official site before you buy. How we verify listings.
