Our take

Choosing a Christmas tree farm near San Antonio

San Antonio is short on Christmas tree farms. The Hill Country is too dry and rocky for most firs, so the few choose-and-cut farms grow pines and cypress, and they are all a drive out of town: Pipe Creek to the northwest, Devine to the southwest and Jakes Colony near Seguin to the east. Plan on 40 minutes to an hour each way, and treat it as an outing rather than an errand.

What you'll find in the field

Expect Leyland cypress, Arizona cypress and pines such as Afghan and Virginia pine rather than the Fraser or noble firs sold on city lots. They are softer-needled and lighter than a fir, and they're fresh because you cut them yourself. If your heart is set on a fir, Pipe Creek and Devine Acres both sell pre-cut Fraser firs from North Carolina alongside their own trees.

What it costs

Prices are by the foot. Seiler's near Seguin listed $10 a foot, Pipe Creek about $15 and Devine Acres $20. A 7-foot tree therefore runs from about $70 to $140 before tax. Devine Acres also charges admission, because it's a full farm festival with Santa, snow and music, but each ticket comes with a $10 credit toward your tree.

Which farm suits you

  • Before Thanksgiving: Pipe Creek opens on Monday, November 23, and Devine Acres on Saturday, November 21.
  • The simplest, cheapest trip: Seiler's, if its 2026 dates are confirmed. Call ahead, and leave the dog at home.
  • A day out with small kids: Devine Acres, open weekends and Black Friday until December 20.
  • Full service: Pipe Creek lends the saw, then shakes, nets and ties the tree, with free hayrides on weekends.
