Choose-and-cut farm on Hwy 16 in Pipe Creek, northwest of San Antonio: field-grown pines and cypress at about $15 a foot, pre-cut Fraser firs from $95. Opens Nov 23.
Pipe Creek Christmas Tree Farm is at the corner of Texas Highway 16 and Phil's Road in Pipe Creek, out in the Hill Country between Helotes and Bandera, about 50 minutes from downtown San Antonio. In the field you can cut an Afghan pine, a Leyland cypress or an Arizona cypress. The farm lends you a saw, and once the tree is down the staff shake out the loose needles, wrap it in netting and give you cord to tie it to the car.
Field trees cost about $15 a foot. If you'd rather have a fir, there are pre-cut Fraser firs from North Carolina starting at $95, kept in water and shade until they sell, and living trees in 15-gallon pots for $179 that you can plant after Christmas. The farm also sells fresh Fraser fir wreaths and tree stands.
On weekends there are free hayrides when the weather allows. The farm takes cash, checks and the major cards.
