ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo is the light show most Chicago families know, and it's also the cheapest of the ticketed ones: $7 to $12 bought ahead, and free on most Mondays. The bigger, more elaborate trails are in the suburbs, at the Morton Arboretum, the Chicago Botanic Garden, Brookfield Zoo and Cantigny. Downtown, the tree lighting and the Magnificent Mile parade are free.
City or suburbs
In the city, ZooLights is open every night from November 20 and is reachable by transit. Christmas Around the World at the Museum of Science and Industry is indoors and included with admission. In the western suburbs there are Illumination in Lisle (from November 14), Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo (from 3 pm, so you can arrive in daylight) and Christmas at Cantigny in Wheaton. On the North Shore, Lightscape runs at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe.
Free, downtown
The city Christmas tree is lit in Millennium Park on Friday, November 20. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival parade on Saturday, November 21 switches on the lights on 200 trees along Michigan Avenue.
Book the gardens early, keep a plan B indoors
The suburban gardens charge by date, so book early for December weekends. On a bitter night, the museum is the indoor fallback. Our full comparison of Chicago's light shows has every date and price side by side.
